Octopuses breed through a process where the male octopus transfers spermatophores, or sperm packets, to the female using a specialized arm. The female then fertilizes her eggs with the sperm and lays them in a den, where she guards them until they hatch. This process is often followed by the death of the female, a phenomenon known as semelparity.
